Al Wefaq statement on the arrest of 4 women for peacefully expressing their opinion in front of the Ministry of Interior

Al Wefaq believe the arrest of the 4 women outside the Ministry of Interior, confirms the recurrence of the revengeful tactic of targeting female activists and protesters.

Their arrest shows a systematic assault against Bahraini women in the opposition, particularly related to the act of freely expressing opinion.

Al Wefaq also insists the women acted within their rights by protesting in a peaceful manner outside the Ministry of Interior in Manama. This begs the question of what dangers are involved in peaceful protest?

This act by the regime is another indication of a recurrence of the tactic of targeting any individual who speaks out against dictatorship.

Al Wefaq calls for the immediate release of the 4 detained women and considers their imprisonment as proof of the failure of the recent constitutional amendments, which have been so widely celebrated by those in the Government.

Furthermore it shows the massive gap between the demands and aspirations that have ignited the people for over one year and the actions of the state. The call for democratic reforms continues to be neglected and is instead met with stubbornness and a fierce security grip that excludes no one from it’s revenge and brutality.

Al Wefaq pleads to the international community and all human rights organisations concerned with women’s rights, to stand up for Bahrain and prevent the authorities from continuing this violent crackdown on women that has characterised it’s activities over the past year.

We call for an end to the use of illegal and immoral detention of peaceful activists and protesters.
