Al Wefaq Secretary-General: Transition to democracy is a public demand that cannot be avoided

Sheikh Ali Salman, Secretary General of Al Wefaq, stressed that the struggle of the Bahraini people did not start on 14th February 2011 but the coming of the Arab Spring has increased the pace of the demands. What’s more the people of Bahrain will continue the fight until they get the basic right of the people being the source of all powers.

The people’s fight began before 14th February and the pace of demands has only quickened since then

In a public gathering on 31st July in Karzkan, in the western directorate of Bahrain, Al Wefaq General Secretary made clear that the uprising has achieved success in the realms of media, human rights and politics. As a result of their steadfastness and insistence on their demands the Bahraini people have created an international climate that accepts political reforms should take place in Bahrain.

He added that the Bahraini citizen is of huge value and no one can fool him by making up religious plots or by pretending that Bahrain is a special case. Indeed no one can silence him through false deeds or through relying on the repressive measures of the security services.

It would be to the advantage of the regime and the international community to move towards a transitional democracy.

Stop the misinformation in the media
Sheikh Ali Salman stated that Al Wefaq’s communications with the international community is a fundamental principle. Like any other political party that represents a large number of people, Al Wefaq intends to meet with the countries that have similar perspectives and respect for their people, with the main purpose being to deliver the position of Al Wefaq to the international community and to benefit from their expertise.

Communication with the international community should be ongoing to prevent any misinformation due to the authorities attempts to spread misleading information about the demands and actions of the Bahraini people. Communications across human rights, diplomatic and political are all essential to create more pressure on the international community to put into practice the values that they preach. On the issue of meeting with Bahraini officials Sheikh Ali Salman said, “we don’t close doors but we also don’t go into any unfruitful meetings that undermine the demands of the Bahraini people.”

Sheikh Ali Salman stressed that Al Wefaq rejects any violence in its approach to protest and will continue to adhere to a peaceful movement, through organising gatherings, sit-in protests and demonstrations. He also stressed on the consideration of the country’s interest as well as the future of the people. “We want to achieve change with as few losses of life as possible, from all parties, because we do not want to build a future that is based on bloodshed.”

“We adhere to the international standards of peaceful protest and yet the authorities, who have signed international treaties, are not committed to respecting the standards of the international community.

He said that the regime has itself violated the holiness of Ramadhan by having no respect for humans, raiding homes and terrifying children and women and attacking mosques. It is therefore unacceptable for the regime to argue that protests should stop during this month, it is the people’s right to protest whenever they like, before during and after Ramadhan.

He also stressed that those who prevent people from their rights are the ones who should be blamed for the losses suffered by this country.

The last uprising
Sheikh Ali Salman said, “We hope that this is going to be the last uprising so that we don’t need to do this again in the future. Yes we might need protests and demonstrations to put pressure on an elected government if it does not fulfil the people’s aspirations and the majority want it to resign, but their demands will be filled without stubbornness from either side. There will be a clear process to stop the abuse of power.”

He added “Any person who claims to love Bahrain whilst rejecting democracy is a liar. If anyone wants stability in our country, they should allow and support the transition to democracy.”

He clarified that the point of reforming the regime is to transform it from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy, such as those in Britain and Spain. “We also want to develop the system from being a dictatorship to becoming a democracy and this is the core of the people’s demands to be the source of all powers.”

Transforming to democracy is to the advantage of all parties except for those who are corrupted, but they are so small in number. The non-fulfilment of the public demands is the main reason for the situation in Bahrain to explode like what has occurred in Tunisia and Libya (the oil producer).

No turning backwards
On the issue of the regime containing both hardliners and moderates, Sheikh Ali Salman clarified, “I am interested in deeds and what I see on the ground that the regime is fully responsible for. We are in a discriminatory system that is even worse than the old apartheid regime of South Africa. We live in a state that has violated all rights, demolished mosques and all violations documented by Mr. Bassiouni are still ongoing.

He continued that anyone who claims to reject discrimination should appear publically and condemn the violations or at least make clear they are powerless to stop them.

He added that all political parties, despite their differences, share the common onion that real urgency is needed towards real democratic transition.

Sheikh Ali Salman stressed that this uprising will not turn backwards, nor will it stop until the whole public demands have been fulfilled although no one can know how long this may take. But these demands are the same as other humanitarian demands from different areas all over the world. Whilst the gaining of these demands is inevitable, the regime is using all it’s strengths to delay meeting them. We insist their fulfilment is for the good of the country, as we are unaware of what the future may bring.

He elaborated, “We have been on this land for centuries, Sunni’s and Shi’ites will always live together as instructed by our religion and our common interest of having a peaceful future for all, that guarantees a dignified and free life for our children and their ambitions.

Rights violations are ongoing
Sheikh Ali Salman stressed that ending impunity is an idea agreed by international treaties. One can disagree with these treaties but that does not justify the committing of crimes against your opponents. Accountability is necessary to ensure crimes are not repeated and anyone who is deemed to be responsible politically or criminally should be prosecuted in an independent judicial system.

He said the Darkness Gangs (regime forces) perpetrated many crimes that led to deaths, attacked women and houses as well as mosques, and are still committing these crimes today.

He stressed that the one who is responsible for violence is the one who engages in the suppression of those who call for their rights in peaceful protest. In terms of violence the opposition has consistently condemned all forms of violence and always called for peaceful means of protesting.

Sheikh Ali Salman concluded by recommending that the people keep their social bonds strong and carry on with their demands peacefully until they are fulfilled. He finished by saying, “the martyrs have sacrificed for a just cause.”
