A Bahraini Activist's Letter to the Irish Government: Silence is Complicity

This latter was handed-over to the Irish government earlier today during a march organized by Irish activists in solidarity with the medics and sacked students in Bahrain.

Dear Sirs,
I write this letter to you as pro-democracy Bahraini who has been detained, tortured and sacked from job, merely because I participated in a peaceful protest rally. I strongly believe the vast majority of the opposition – which represents about 70% of the population - shares my stance.
Following the fake reform king Hamad proposed a decade ago to end the popular uprising that lasted for five years, in which king Hamad betrayed his promises to the people and appointed an upper legislative house that has the power to nullify the elected lower house, Bahrain steadily returned to dictatorship. The betrayal happened on the 14th of February 2001.

Throughout the period 2001 to 2011, the regime began to arbitrarily detain political activists. In 2010, Human Rights Watch released a shocking report titled "Torture Redux: The Revival of Physical Coercion during Interrogations in Bahrain". The report revealed that tortured return in Bahrain after 2007.
The serious deterioration of human rights conditions, in addition to the increased state-corruption and most importantly, the unlawful political naturalization, which aimed to distort the original demographic composition. These acts have made the political situation in the country extremely fragile.

It was no surprise that the Arab Spring would quickly find its way to Bahrain! On the 14th of February, 2011 (which marked the tenth anniversary of king Hamad’s betrayal), tens of thousands of people – from all sectors – organized a peacefully sit-in in various places to express their dissatisfaction with current political and financial situation. However, despite being completely peaceful, regime riot forces (who are mostly non-Arabic speaking mercenaries from Pakistan) viciously attacked the protestors with tear gas, flush grenades and even shotgun pellets. As a result, many were injured and one young man was killed (he was shot from the back by shotgun right at his house door!).

In the next day at the funeral of the man killed, regime mercenaries opened fire at the mourners, killing another.
In retaliation, the people decided to camp peacefully at the Pearl Square and demanded real reform and punishment to the ones responsible for the killing. However, despite Salman Bin Hamad’s (the Crown Prince) claims to allow the protestors to camp, regime forces ambushed the protestors three days later after 2am when most people were asleep! Five people were killed in the ambush and hundreds were severely injured including Dr. Sadiq Al Ekri, who was sleeping in the medics camp (Dr. Sadiq required an urgent head-surgery to save his life).

The ambush made it all clear that the regime has no intention to listen to the people and is already beyond redemption.
With the trust completely gone, people no longer demand reform; they demand the downfall of the regime and the right to self-determination to choose a new political system that meets their aspiration.
A regime that is no longer accepted by about 70% of the population is by all means an illegitimate one.

As any dictatorship would react, instead of compromising with the people, the regime has launched a bloody cracked down in cooperation with US backed Saudi invasion under disguise of the GCC Peninsula Shield Forces. Many people have been killed, women have been raped, mosques and worship places have been leveled to the ground, and thousands have been arbitrarily detained, tortured and sacked from their jobs.

I wondered why the regime would go to such extent. But the answered was very clear: it is the US and Western governments’ hypocrisy. Unlike the case in Libya and Syria, Bahrain monarch Hamd Bin Isa Al-Khalifa is an ally to the west and Bahrain hosts the US 5th Fleet naval base. The muted criticism toward the regime and the resumed arm deals have been fully utilized by the regime to continue its bloody crackdown.

While the people in Ireland have not hesitated to support the popular revolution in Bahrain, I am honestly very surprised to see the Irish government taking a different stance! The complicit silence of the Irish authorities toward the case of Bahrain medics’ case, who have been professionally trained in Ireland, is very disappointing.

For the sake of the common history Ireland shares with Bahrain, I would really wish for the Irish government to change its stance and support the revolution in Bahrain, or at the very least break the silence over the medic’s case.

Your faithfully,
A Pro-Democracy Bahraini Citizen
