CMS How to get articles and img setup in CMS home page?

I've been playing around with the CMS for a while, but that is the big piece I am still missing.
How do I get this special home page layout for the Articles you show in the screenshoot page of your site?

I am trying to replace the same having a big picture on top "like top article" and following 2 rows with all the other categories and articles... Is it grid manager? Layout?
I've loaded the sample data but I can't get this done....am going nuts.....

Another question is about the Images associated to an article. I was wondering if is there any option or to resize the image to a fixed pixel amount the article preview on the CMS page, to make them look al similar?

Finally how to get the 1px fixed border to the images of the article? Is it in the Image itselfr or done through CSS?
