login time out issue

As part of side project on the same server, I read out the $username = $vbulletin->userinfo['username']; variable as returned by the global.php. This worked fine until we upgraded from 3.8.3 to 3.8.5. After 15 minutes of forum inactivity, the side script will read the variable as empty, while if one refreshed the page on the forums, one is still logged in (when chosen to stay logged in). Did something change to the global.php script which may cause this or could there be some other issue? Thanks in advance. __DEFINE_LIKE_SHARE__
