Forum Downgrading Problems

Hello.

I installed 4.0.2 but it was a right pig's ear and try as I might I just couldn't get it to work. So I deleted it all and put a backup I made of our previous version (3.8.5) but it seems to be stuck somewhere inbetween.

The admin area says we're on 3.8.5 but I keep getting a load of database errors (one on the admin area home page itself, most of the others in large threads). Any ideas how to do a proper downgrade? I know its not supported by vB themselves but I just want a stable forum back!

I do have database backups (one from before the upgrade and one after it). Should I try and put those back in, and if so how? There's no way through vB is there? Our site is hosted by a bigger company so should I send them the database and ask them to do it?

The database error says (one example from a particular thread, but they're all pretty similar):
