CMS Accessing passwords for other areas of my domain

I have a site that's written in PHP and uses FileMaker as a database (I can connect from it to mySQL via ODBC).

I have about 2000 users with logins and passwords for the main site and about 100 in my forums. I'm considering upgrading to the VB CMS Suite but it will only benefit me if I can create a single login for everything.

I'm VERY PHP challenged and most of my development was done by someone else.

Is it possible to use the same logins and passwords for both? If so, can someone please give me some novice level insight as to what would need to be done? I don't need to know how to do it but only understand well enough to have someone else do it for me.
