Department of freedoms: Regime is undertaking vindictive measures against activists
Al-Wefaq strongly condemns the arrest of Al-Mahafda and demands his immediate release

3rd Nov 2012
Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society strongly condemns the arrest of the human rights defender, Head of Monitoring In Bahrain Center for Human Rights, Sayed Yousif Al-Mahafda, for participating in a peaceful march in which protesters insisted on their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Al-Wefaq called for the immediate and unconditioned release of al-Muhafda who is a prisoner of conscience.

The Human Rights and Freedoms Department at Al-Wefaq considers the arrest of Al-Mahafdha as a part of the escalating vindictive measures taken by the regime to target citizens and human rights activists for their opinions and pro-democracy stances.

The department also stated that the regime in Bahrain is turning its back on all pledges and recommendations of the international community as well as the BICI as it is continuing to violate human rights turning Bahrain to a “human rights blackhole”.

The department also said that arrests, summons and pursuits of human rights activists are conducted after the regime's announcement to ban all demonstrations, depriving citizens from exercising their humanitarian basic right to protest and express their opinions.

“Such ban violates the Bahrain’s constitution and all international treaties and covenants that have been signed by the government of Bahrain and are considered part of the local law”, it stated.

The freedoms department said that no serious intention of the regime to implement a single recommendation of the Human Rights Council in Geneva so far.
“What is happening on ground is heading in opposite direction of the recommendations”.

It clarified that Bahrainis are suffering from suppression of the security forces that have the regime’s green light to commit various crimes and violations.
“Pursuit and arrests of human rights activists based on false accusations are part of the regime’s revenge campaign to punish citizens”.
