Press Release: Genève Summit Failed to Meet its Objectives in Bahrain

A local saying in Bahrain goes like this: “those who ascertain they will escape punishment are most likely to misbehave”.

This summarizes Genève Summit for human right implications on Bahrain with unprecedented repression and brutality against peaceful protests within 24 hours of summit’s ending.

The opposition may have scored victory in the press realm, but the scene on the ground continued unchanged: toxic gases, flash/sound bombs, shotgun pellets, home raids and torture. Hasan Abdulla (59) died just two days ago after a toxic gas canister was shot inside his house in Sitra town.

As long as the United States Fifth Fleet remains in Bahrain, the criminal and illegitimate regime of Al-Khalifa will feel protected and will continue to bring slow death upon the people and deny them their rights. Therefore, we hold the US Administration fully responsible for all the tragedies that have occurred since the outbreak of the revolution in February 14th last year.

We consider the illegal existence* of the US 5th Fleet in our country to be the reason behind Al-Khalifas’ extraordinary arrogance and thus the root-cause of the suffering of our people.

The existence of the 5th Fleet base in Bahrain is the main obstacle that is preventing us from obtaining true freedom and independence. Therefore, it is empirical that the base is closed or moves elsewhere.

Note
* The agreement, in which the US 5th Fleet was granted permission to stay for five additional years (until 2016) was renews last year in secret, bypassing the already powerless half-appointed parliament.
