Bahrain: Regime forces brutally repressed peaceful protesters in Manama

Regime forces brutally repressed the opposition rally planned to start at the heart of Manama city today. They excessively used their force against peaceful protesters who took into streets from several start-points. Protesters shouted with slogans which emphasize the legitimate demands of the Bahrain pro-democracy revolution, and called for the immediate release of prisoners of conscience.

On Friday (7th September 2012) evening, the regime forces indiscriminately and heavily fired suffocating and toxic gases on citizens, Manama neighborhoods and households. Many injuries and suffocated cases were reported; especially among elderly people who were targeted at their houses with gases.

Moreover, many citizens were arrested as they were participating in the opposition peaceful demonstration. Regime forces imposed a security cordon on the capital and they fill all roads and alleyways linked with Manama. They attempted to stop people from practicing their right to express their views and loudly raised their legitimate national demands.

Number of opposition leaders; including Al-Wefaq Secretary-General Shaikh Ali Salman, ex MPs, municipal members, activists and others actively participated in the peaceful demonstrations at the heart of the capital today.

Regime forces closed off entrances and main roads leading to the capital. They were highly alerted to prevent people from reaching Manama to protest. Despite all of these security measures, thousands of Bahrainis took into Manama streets and alleyways demanding a real democratic state and all prisoners of conscience to be released.

Manama and all roads leading to its entrances were transformed into kind of military barracks. Most of main roads to the capital were militarily closed off which caused massive traffics jams.

All today's protests inside Manama were subjected to brutal repression and excessive use of force by regime cops without prior warning. Regime forces deliberately targeted whoever waved Bahraini flags or opposition figures who are still behind bars. Protesters chanted to "We demand the immediate unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience. We demand for a real democratic transition in Bahrain".

Many protests were peacefully restarted after got repressed by the regime forces all the time before the sunset. The regime forces continued its excessive violent actions against peaceful protesters; which left many casualties.

The opposition societies emphasized that banning and repressing the demonstration today is a result of the tyrannical and dictatorship mentality arrogantly adopted by all parts of the state. The regime left only arms to talk with peaceful protesters in Bahrain.

Opposition societies stressed that "we reject the official decision to ban today's demonstration as the right of peaceful protest must be respected. The right to peacefully protest is a basic human right that nobody can be deprived of . It is the right of people to choose the place where to demonstrate and protest without any conditions and restrictions defined by the illegitimate government. This right is a part of the people demands when they ask for the democratic transition.
