Congratulations! You are pregnant. The baby's developing well and everybody has been told. And now, it's just a matter of 9 months till you hold him/her in your arms. Pregnancy can be a very stressful period of your life – hormonal changes will affect your strength, flexibility; and your emotions. Lower back and neck strains are common; as are pains and fatigue in the legs. These may all result in complications during delivery. The postnatal period will be taxing for different reasons. Physical demands placed on a weak body may result in injuries of the neck, back and/or weight-bearing joints. Irrespective of whether you deliver naturally or via C-section, return to a pre-pregnancy state has to be carefully graded to address loose ligaments, muscular imbalances, and loss of flexibility. Pregnancy is a lifestyle change. You have to adapt to your environment; you have to make the environment adapt to you. Who is best suited to tackle the needs of women during pregnancy and post? You need somebody who not only has a fitness background, but also has a sound basis in the anatomy and physiology of the female body before, during, and after giving birth. We at Physio in Motion believe it is the Physiotherapist. “Move Mummy Move” is a 3-tier wellness programme designed for the pregnant and postnatal clients. The Movement Screening analyses possible aches/pains, tightnesses, weaknesses, and environment-based stressors. In Movement Therapy, Pilates-based exercises are prescribed based on the results of the assessment. Home exercises and ergonomics will also be addressed in these sessions. Massage Therapy sessions prevent water retention, improve circulation, and release all tension building up in the neck, back and legs.
