Bahrain: The Struggle for Democracy With Sheikh Ali Salman, Leader of Al-Wefaq, Bahrain's largest opposition party Date: Friday 16th December 2011 Time: 6:30-8:30pm Venue: Lecture Theatre 1, Cruciform Building, UCL, Gower Street, WC1E 6BT With the recent publication of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry report, providing a damning assessment of the Government's treatment of pro-democracy protesters, we ask what next for the strategically important Gulf Island? For the past 9 months demonstrations have rocked the country and have been met with brutal repression and the entering of troops from neighbouring Saudi Arabia. So is Bahrain any closer to change and what are the demands of the opposition? Sheikh Ali Salman the Leader of Al-Wefaq, Bahrain's largest opposition party, will be outlining what the opposition are demanding and what he thinks is the way forward for Bahrain. For more information: [email protected] Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/events/125409774240553/ Biography of Sheikh Ali Salman: Sheikh Ali Salman is the General Secretary of Bahrain’s largest political party, Al-Wefaq. In the 2010 general election Al Wefaq received 67% of votes that went to MPs, before withdrawing from Parliament in response to the brutal crackdown against pro democracy demonstrations in February 2011. Sheikh Ali has a been a constant advocate for democracy in Bahrain since the 1990’s when he was forcibly exiled for leading a campaign for the reinstatement of the constitution. During his exile he spent time in London before returning to Bahrain in 2001 as part of a general amnesty. Sheikh Ali was elected as an MP in the 2006 parliamentary elections. He is well known for his belief in peaceful dialogue as a means for reform and has consistently pushed this line during the recent months of unrest. |
