For more information: [email protected] Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/events/125409774240553/ Biography of Sheikh Ali Salman: Sheikh Ali Salman is the General Secretary of Bahrain’s largest political party, Al-Wefaq. In the 2010 general election Al Wefaq received 67% of votes that went to MPs, before withdrawing from Parliament in response to the brutal crackdown against pro democracy demonstrations in February 2011. Sheikh Ali has a been a constant advocate for democracy in Bahrain since the 1990’s when he was forcibly exiled for leading a campaign for the reinstatement of the constitution. During his exile he spent time in London before returning to Bahrain in 2001 as part of a general amnesty. Sheikh Ali was elected as an MP in the 2006 parliamentary elections. He is well known for his belief in peaceful dialogue as a means for reform and has consistently pushed this line during the recent months of unrest. |
