Ministry of Interior is responsible for suppression of protests and the use of excessive violence and repression

Al Wefaq Media Centre: Al Wefaq did not attend the meeting held by the Ministry of Interior

In a statement released by the media centre of Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, Al Wefaq made clear there were not represented in a meeting held by the Ministry of Interior with only three societies attending.

The media centre stressed that the right to protest does not rely on meetings that will only impose more restrictions on freedom of expression, that is a basic right guaranteed by the constitution and international law.

Al Wefaq also stated that the Ministry of Interior is responsible for the use of excessive force and violence in the suppression of pro democracy protesters who peacefully express their opinion. The Ministry should stop the practice of such revengeful acts rather than spend time discussing where protests can and can’t take place. The right to protest is a basic right and is guaranteed by both national and international law. It is therefore unlawful to prevent people from practicing this right and to violently suppress the act of freedom of expression in Bahrain.
