Bahraini authorities arrested a 21-year-old girl for participating in a peaceful demonstration that was suppressed by security forces on Friday 15 th June. She remains in detention until now.

Zahra Al Shaikh, a university student, was arrested on the coast of Karbadad as part of the suppression by security forces against demonstrators insisting on their right to protest, after authorities had banned the protest that had been called by opposition groups.

The prosecution ordered her detention to continue for 7 days, despite her need to sit university exams during this period. According to her parents, Zahra was subjected to ill treatment and complained of harassment.

Zahra’s arrest occurred in spite of all the calls by the international community to release prisoners of conscience. The authorities continue with the detention of women in relation to cases of freedom of expression and their right to protest.
