Suite Upgrade and move location?

I have tried a few times now and just can't seem to get it right...

my current forum is 3.8.4 and is running at www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/forum.php

I now have the full suit of VB (4.0.2 PL2) I want to move it to the root folder so it's located at:

www.vwwatercooled.org.au

In an effort for a trial run I have replicated the database and tried installing to a new sub folder /forum

I have even moved the whole database to another server and domain and tried installing the forums there to ensure there is no conflicts with the current forums. I have disabled all the plugs in etc (only half a dozen to begin with) and deleted all the banned users, old threads etc to minimise data to be transferred.

My problem is no matter what I do I end up with no style at all and can't seem to get it looking like it should... also half the links on the new forum install point to the old location... seems there must be something referenced in the database that points at " /newforum/upload/forum.php" which is the old location...

So is there something here I'm missing?

Should I (or can I) set up a whole new forum then just import the threads from the old database?

Am I right in my understanding this will (??) break all the old links people may have posted around the internet? Is there a way around this? __DEFINE_LIKE_SHARE__
