Forum best way to manage subscriptions to forum

Hi,

I'm in the process of setting up vBulletin 4.0.1 with cms, etc. This is for a teleseminar course and we will be charging a fee for joining the course & forum. As such all areas including articles need to be 'protected'.

We intend to use e-junkie to gather the revenue, so we can set up an affiliate scheme.

My big question at this stage relates to whether I should use the forum subscription manager, and whether it is compatible with e-junkie operating the shopping cart, or whether I should use my host to password protect the whole forum area, allowing only access to the top level of the site which will have sign-up, promo pages & demos available to any visitors.

If anyone has run something similair I'd appreciate you sharing some knowledge or experience of setting up this kind of thing!
