After the Bahrain regime faced strong condemnation at the UN UPR in Geneva:
Khalil Almarzooq: The Bahraini authorities are bringing superficial claims of dialogue into the public in order to escape international pressure

Khalil Almarzooq, the Political Assistant to the General Secretary of Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, reiterated Al Wefaq’s and the opposition’s commitment to meeting their demands of achieving an inclusive political system, that guarantees fair participation of all. If Al Wefaq engages in any dialogue it will be to achieve this end.

Almarzooq said the government brings the question of dialogue to the public only when it finds itself in a political predicament and has no further issues to manipulate with. It is clear that it has referred to dialogue now in response to heaving criticism and condemnation during the UPR in Geneva.

This happened straight after the world became outraged by the human rights violations and lack of the implementation of the BICI in terms of human rights obligations, which it promised to fulfill. It revealed to the world the broad violations committed against Bahraini citizens.

Almarzooq, speaking to LuaLuaTV, clarified that the authorities wish to prove that they are in favour of dialogue whilst the opposition is against dialogue. “It creates chaos instead of a political solution that could save Bahrain from this political crisis. However, the regime wants to damage the image of Al Wefaq and the opposition by spreading rumours that Al Wefaq has it’s own agenda in begging the western countries for dialogue.”

He added, “This is exactly what the hardliners in the authorities want. They want a divided Bahrain, preoccupied by it’s political, social and economic catastrophic situation. However, people now are aware of these lies. There will be no real solution unless there is a real dialogue and a political solution through which all authorities will be in the hands of the people, by the people and for the people.”

“When the regime unilaterally imposed the 2002 constitution, the plan was to monopolies all powers within the kings domination. For that reason the 14th February uprising was sparked. If this way of thinking continues, we don’t know what will be the next outcome.”

“Therefore it is a favorable opportunity for a serious dialogue to begin in order to get out of the current political impasse, by bringing back all authorities power to the people, with no discrimination. This what Al Wefaq and the opposition societies are asking for.”

He mentioned that, “There is a kind of internal conflict within the ruling family. Some of them outright refuse to talk to the opposition. This group seeks to spoil any chance to initiate a serious dialogue by spreading false and misleading news. For example one of the King’s advisors recently tweeted about communications between the regime and Al Wefaq, none of which was true.”

“We are with the principle of dialogue, asking for serious talk with the regime. Even if we communicate with the international community we always make clear our insistence on conducting a fruitful dialogue. We consider dialogue as a realistic exit to the escalating crisis in Bahrain. This is our consistent call both inside and outside Bahrain.”

Almarzooq pointed to what had been said by one of the King’s advisors about a deal, “He only aims to bring forward a superficial claim of dialogue in order to deceive the public and make them believe that there is an unannounced compromise that will exclude some parties.”

“Some officials systematically spoil any step forwards that might produce a political breakthrough in Bahrain. However, when the opposition succeeds in achieving some democratic progress it will be to the benefit of all people. Whoever attempts to stop any democratic achievement undoubtedly disturbs the bright future for all Bahrainis, not just the sect they belong to.

“Al Wefaq looks to bringing back the people as the decision maker, with fair political representation for all. When the popular demands are realized, even those who opposed them will enjoy their benefits.”

Almarzooq continued, “The cabinet which is currently assigned by the King must be elected, in which each Bahraini should have a fair representation in the government and legislative authority. All must be represented in the security services and judiciary. The regime in Bahrain must fairly express the will of all people, Sunni and Shi’ite.”
