First off. Hello to all the VB Guru's out there! Hopefully you have some great answers to my dilemma.
So I have been appointed in charge of moving a local forum to a new server... Unfortunately the guy who was in charge of the old server had a falling out with the Admin so here I am trying to save the forum...
Here is the info:
Current forum is ANCIENT.. VB 3.0.7 - I do not have access to the current server to get the files... but,
I have a copy of the SQL backup (I am assuming it is on SQL 4.0 or older as the VB version is so old
New Server is GoDaddy and I have the option of SQL 4.1.x or SQL 5.0
Here are my questions:
What is the best way to get this forum up and running on the new server and upgraded to VB 4.x (I know that in order to do the upgrading process it would have to go from 3.0.7 to 3.8.x then to 4.x) but.. I don't have access to the current files only the database...
Keeping in mind it is not Crucial to maintain the look and feel of the current settings they just want the data to be kept and basically re-configure the forum to be more up to date etc. Is it possible to install 4.x off the bat and somehow migrate the old database in?
I have attempted to re-create the current environment of the forum by installing 3.0.7 first and creating an SQL 4.1 db, but the restore failed (i assume because its an older version of sql trying to restore to 4.1)?
If anyone can basically run down what i need to install, convert, upgrade and config in this case to get this working the most efficiently that would be great!!
