Forum Attachment directory location

I searched for this for while but haven't found a definite answer for my situation. I am hoping someone can assist me with this.

I want to move the attachments from the database to a directory. My host is 1and1 and I have a few different sites. When I log in with my FTP client, I see the folders for my different sites.

Site2
Site3

Site3 has the vBulletin CMS install for which I want to store the attachments. This directory has the usual folders like admincp, archive, modcp, images etc and many files so I assume Site3 is my root directory for the site.

Where do I create the attachment directory? In the Site3 directory like Site3/attachments or one up so it will look like this:

Site1
Site2
Site3
Site3attachments

In both cases, would I still have to do CHMOD 777? And what would I use for the Attachment File Path in Admin CP? __DEFINE_LIKE_SHARE__
