Many Categories Could this be a problem

Hello i am building up my forum and i found that i can easily have a hundred or more categories subjects ,so i am bring it down to sub categories not to make a long and lost front page , i don't mine doing the work i am more concerned on how the site perform
Is it better to keep the forum simple and let the members chose there topic. i thought this would help directing them to the right rooms. Other sites with the same relations are a lot more simpler and went to the direct approach so was it just laziness or is there a real strategy. Thanks __DEFINE_LIKE_SHARE__
