CMS Selecting multiple categories

I'm curious whether it is possible to select multiple categories to filter articles in current section by those categories?

For example I've got section "News" and categories "Local", "Football", "Hockey". I assign general football-related articles to category "Football" and local ones to both "Local" and "Football". The same for hockey-related items. And I want to be able to get all articles on local football by selecting two relevant categories.

Of course, it is possible to convert Football and Hockey categories into subsections but this defeats the purpose of categories spanning multiple sections. For instance should I want to create section "Reviews" next to "News" under common parent section "Main" with all the above categories assigned to the "Main", and with the same "Football"/"Hockey" subsections under "Reviews" I won't be able to see all football news and reviews by selecting "Football" category.
