Suite Conflicting documentation on upgrading to 4.0.3 (baseline 3.6.x or 3.8.4?)

The vbulletin manual (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/upgrade) says:

You can upgrade to the latest version of vBulletin 4 from the following vBulletin versions:

• Any previous version of vBulletin 4, from version 4.0.0 Beta 1 to the current version.
• Any version of vBulletin 3 from version 3.6.0 and newer. If your vBulletin version is older than 3.6.0, you will need to upgrade to at least vBulletin 3.6.0 before you can upgrade to vBulletin 4.

the vb4_readme.html that comes with vb4 itself says:

Before upgrading to vBulletin 4.0, you will need to download the files to upgrade to vBulletin 3.8.4. Once your community is running on vBulletin 3.8.4, then you can upload the vBulletin 4.0 files and perform the upgrade to this version. If you need assistance with this, contact vBulletin Support.

I'm referring to the vb4 suite, but either way.... which is it? I'm at 3.8.1 - do I need to go to 3.8.4 first? Why does the documentation contradict itself? __DEFINE_LIKE_SHARE__
