During my struggle to find backlinks and increasing traffic to my vb site I thought of Facebook.
Now I know that there are a lot of apps and add-ons that integrate the forum to Facebook. But I was thinking to try something genuine and human.
So what I did, I created a Facebook account in name somewhat near my website name and then I created a Facebook page.
So then I searched Facebook for celebrities in my industry (namely I searched for famous medical teachers fan pages since I run a medical education forum).
Then started requesting friendships with the thousands of fans of those medical teachers fan pages.
In a matter of a week, I've got 1000+ friends!
Then I requested those friends to be a fan of my page
Well over 200 became fan
Once your website page has more than 100 fans you can then create a username for it and so a custom URL such as facebook.com/page/urwebsite
Since then fans and friends numbers kept proliferating like crazy
Of course there are links to my website withing that page and I started to get some descent traffic from my Facebook page.

Also don't forget to import your forum RSS feeds into that Facebook page, you can do that by adding notes and then entering the feeds URL. This way you don't need to worry about constantly updating your friends as it will be automatically done with each and every new thread.
Guys, let's face it, people will certainly live on Facebook more than on your website even if they like it to much ... __DEFINE_LIKE_SHARE__
