Style on showFUNKY fashion and music - these were the stars of the recent Singapore Fashion Festival, which was on from 24 March to April 2 in the island republic. The event got off to a rollicking start with MTV rocking the house with their Fashionably Loud show. Popular UK rock band Placebo, all goth-inspired and fashionably sullen, got the younger set raring to go when they performed at a runway show featuring labels like as Miss Sixty, Fashion Assassin, Energie and G-Star. Although the fashion was targeted at the youth market - there were lots of super short skirts, cropped tops and baggy jeans - the audience comprised of a good mix of people who were ready to party. They included Discovery Channel's Anthony Bourdain, host of No Reservations and A Cook's Tour as well as Ahmad Dhani of Indonesian rock group Dewa 19. Then, the pace slowed down a notch or two. French designer label Jean Paul Gaultier was first up and opened the fashion showcase with its Spring/Summer 2006 collection, with Britain's current favourite model, Lily Cole, taking to the catwalk. Striding down the runway in a beautiful floaty Gaultier dress, Cole, with her pre-Raphaelite looks, certainly took centre stage. The face of Singapore Fashion Festival, Lily Cole, poses on Orchard Road.The Briton, who was also the "face" of the Fashion Festival, had met journalists at a press conference earlier in the day and certainly impressed all in the room with a poise and sophistication which belied her age. She's only 18 and has been modelling for the last four years, and has appeared in a number of high profile ad campaigns for top end brands like Chanel, Hermes, Prada, Christian Lacroix and De Beers. Touted as the next Kate Moss, Cole said that Moss "has an amazing career and it was an honour to even be compared to her." It's star attraction aside, Gaultier's collection revisited romance and the clothes had layers of lace, tulle and flounces. Delicate floral prints and embellishments were evident, and the look was very dreamy and whimsical, with plenty of choices for this season's love affair with the dress. Skimpy outfits and big attitudes set the scene at the MTV event.The next day, the hip label G-Star and department store label Tangs put up day shows, while Salvatore Ferragamo's Spring/Summer 2006 collection was up at night. G-Star Raw, a very popular label in Singapore, had trench coats and jackets, casual shirts and short skirts in studded and pre-washed denim. Details were in the rips along the seams of the jeans and pockets, all designed for a relaxed feel. Tangs based their collection on Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's' classic, The Secret Garden, and had a very entertaining show featuring little children reading a giant version of the book and doing baby ballet, playing the flute and dancing, during the showing of a seemingly less inspired fashion collection. As a general rule, department store brands try to keep up with the trends by offering affordable clothes, but somehow there wasn't anything really new from Tangs. Except for a few pretty summery pieces, the collection consisted more of basics to build your wardrobe on. Salvatore Ferragamo held a charity gala dinner with a percentage of the proceeds going to the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS). At cocktails before dinner, guests were introduced to WRS "stars" like macaws, snowy owls, flamingos and even a golden python! The Ferragamos themselves also made an appearance, with Salvatore Ferragamo Jr. (the founder's grandson) and his cousin Angelica Visconti Ferragamo, joining in the revelry. Korean celebrities Kim So Yeon and Kim Sung Min made a beautiful pair capturing much of the press' attention, while our own lovely Camelia with her equally fashionable manager, Maggie Abang Saufi, were also present. The label's Spring/Summer 2006 collection took women on exotic cruises while the men stylishly braved expeditions in the jungle. Gaultier's colourful creations revisit romance with colours, lace, tulle and flounces.Floaty dresses, tailored slacks and jackets and vests with grommets made up the women's range. Patchwork, embellishment and an explosion of colours like raspberry, lilac and bright green were found on many items. But there were those that were quietly classic, like knee length cardigans and dresses with dropped waistlines. For the men, it was all about the spirit of adventure - one model even strode down the catwalk with a python wrapped around him! Ferragamo's answer to that tricky situation? Well, no beast can bring down a lad in great togs, so the range featured lots of linen, silk and cotton, with jacquard sweaters, colourful shirts, jackets worn over Bermuda shorts and shirt-jackets. Up the next day was Robinsons, another famous department store in Singapore, which put up a sober show to highlight its brands such as Coast, Trucco, Part 2, Machka, Sonneti and Matinique. This store seemed to be more in tune with current trends and showcased ballet-inspired outfits (one of the current trends of the season) with pieces like wraparound cardigans and layered tops. Summer dresses, waistcoats and jacquard jackets were some of the wearable outfits on display. When there is so much fashion on show, a label certainly had to be different to stand out. Some did while others clearly did not, but all in all, the best part of the festival was the "fashion week feel" - a buzz that pervaded all the events, even the gala dinner, which was held inside a white tent outside Ngee Ann City's Civic Plaza, located at the heart of the island's shopping heaven, Orchard Road. Other fashion runway shows were held in malls and there were discounts to be had on selected labels, so it was a good time to fill up wardrobes with fashionable additions. Singapore's Fashion Festival is held annually by the Singapore Tourism Board and features international and local designers and retailers.
