CMS Reduce words/chars in Recent Posts widget

Lynne touched on the answer in this thread: How to reduce no of words in the 'Recent Forum Posts' widgets?

So I took that to mean I should open the file recentposts.php in the aforementioned directory and change "150" to whatever # I wanted? Does this # reflect chars or words? Either way, I tried reducing it down to 25, saved the file, uploaded it... and no change. Is there something else in the file I should be changing... or have I misunderstood the instructions somehow? __DEFINE_LIKE_SHARE__
