Existing site can you change database password with no change to site?

Hi I just want to check I'm not going to muck up my site by doing this but if I close down my site for a sec and then change the database password and the config file database password and then open my site again it shoud be still up fine and everything a?


I wanted to make sure as I can't do a backup that will work on phpmyadmin as it's too big now - and I want to do the putty thing but a part of my password must be a command or something weird so I want to try changing the password so I can do the backups with putty

That's why I wanted to double check before I change the password as with not being able to do a valid backup at the moment if it doesn't work it is going to suck big time!
