Another Licensing question - confirmation required please

Many apologies if this has been covered already* but I can't find a thread which directly answers this...

I own a couple of active 3.x licenses which both expire in January next year.

I have no intention of upgrading to the Suite* I just want to move over to 4.x forums (eventually) in the most cost-effective manner.

It seems to me that I can't pay for an upgrade to 4.x forums now* and hence will have to pay the full upgrade price in January?

I'm really confused* sorry
