CMS Section Layout question
 

Having come from vbadvanced to the new system I'm just trying to figure this out. What we want to do is have our normal homepage which the layount manager configures.

However when you click on a section which we will be using for the different categories of content on the site we want to be able to have a widget in the centre column. At the moment it seems you can only post articles within sections and not instert other content. Do you need to set up more pages like in vbadvanced and then make a widget on the homepage that links to the pages. i.e. we've misunderstood what the sections function is?
