Multitouch on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Apple may hold all the legal cards when it comes to stopping manufacturers from making multitouch devices but that doesn’t stop the many hackers and hobbyists out there from having a crack at it.

We have already seen a multitouch G1 and a sort of multitouch N95 and now Symbian fan and coder Jamie Fuller has come up with a way of making the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic do multitouch too.

Jamie was working on a simple Guitar Hero clone for the 5800 when he realised that the single-touch resistive screen wouldn’t let the player hit two notes at once. Not one to give up easily, he got to work and developed a technique for accepting more than one input at a time.

The result is demonstrated in the video above. The game itself isn’t much to look at, but Jamie is looking for artists and designers to help with that aspect. Hopefully his clever bit of coding will see some use elsewhere. Pinch Zooming plugin for the web browser, anyone?
