The harsh assessment of Bahrain's human rights record came during the country’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the UN Human Rights Council. “Bahrain's response– that all is well and there are no political prisoners– simply doesn’t fly,” said Juliette de Rivero, Geneva director at Human Rights Watch. “It's time for Bahrain to stop denying the problem and take genuine steps to end the country’s human rights crisis.” Bahrain’s second UPR comes after more than a year of violent repression of largely peaceful demonstrations, which began in mid-February 2011. In March 2011, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa declared a state of emergency and special military courts convicted hundreds of people in grossly unfair trials for exercising their rights to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. The king lifted the state of emergency in June but special military courts continued to convict defendants until early October. Hundreds of those convicted for non-violent protests remain behind bars. For more Human Rights Watch reporting on Bahrain, please visit: http://www.hrw.org/middle-eastn-africa/bahrain |
