Cherono beat Utura by just one second in 17:56. Kenyan Pauline Koriwwiang, 2006 World Junior Cross Country champion, finished a distant third in 18:12, two seconds ahead of twice 1500m World champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal from Bahrain.
