Conference: Uprisings in the Arab world: between hope and fears

Annual Conference FDFA Political Affairs Division IV Human Security

Every year, the Political Division IV of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs organises a conference on different aspects of human security. This year’s conference will take place on 18 October focusing on Uprisings in the Arab world.

It began with a desperate young man setting fire to himself in Tunisia in December 2010 but soon transformed itself into a gigantic conflagration which has now spread to several countries in the Near East and Middle East. The people of these countries are demanding democracy, dignity and future prospects. These uprisings, led mainly by young people, make dictators tremble, forcing them to resign or drawing them into a spiral of violent repression. What is behind this wish for change? How are these uheavals experienced by those involved? What are the consequences for North Africa and for the Near and Middle East? How are relations between Europe and the Arab world going to develop? What is Switzerland doing? What is its strategy?

The uprisings in the Arab world, their consequences for the people of the region and the responses by Europe and by Switzerland to these historic changes are the subject of the annual conference of Political Affairs Division IV Human Security of the FDFA. President of the Confederation Mrs Micheline Calmy-Rey, actors, decision-makers and experts from the Arab world, from Europe and from Switzerland will state their viewpoints and discuss these major issues with the audience.
