Users Provide 'login name' for authentication only and 'display name' for all other matters
 

Dear vBulletin dev team,

Today vBulletin does not make the distinction between user name and login name. In certain cases this matters (e.g., privacy). It would be great if vBulletin could separate the login name for user authentication from the display name used on the forums and elsewhere.

I posted a very simple "hack" that implements this on vBulletin 4.0.6 on vBulletin.org in reply to a request from another vBulletin user, as I also need this.

In this "hack" I use a new column "loginname" for authentication purposes only.

I hope this input is useful to others and will make it eventually into vBulletin :)
