The problem I'm having is that in the Admin control panel I get this:

Administrator Attention Required

The directory the sitemap files are to be written into is not writeable. Please change the permissions on the path to be writeable by the web server or enter a different path in the sitemap

I have never changed anything on the xmlsitemap.php, Also I checked the file permissions they are 777. Is this something I even need to fix if so any help please. Thanks in advanced.
