Forum Users still having major login problems

So many of these threads ....

Many of our users are having login problems where they are either just not allowed to login or are logged in then automatically thrown out. It appears random and seems to clear up magically for one only for someone else who was having no trouble to start.

This has been happening since moving from 3.8.4 to gold. I've taken out a ticket on this before but the advice of get them to clear cookies/cache just plain does not work for some. I've had them change browsers with the same results, change my cookie prefix, (so many times) no result, tick the remember me box etc. I've scoured the vBulletin forums for advice and followed it all. Our members are getting a little fed up, what was once a very nice friendly forum is starting to fray around the edges as people get frustrated and I have no answers but what I've been telling them from day one. The thing is that we don't have many members, only 170 as it is a very niche forum and for so many, maybe 20% to be having the same problem, it's worrying. Imagine the problem proportionally on a site with hundereds of thousands of members? Thank God we have quite a few inactive members or I'm sure I'd be looking at a higher figure.

The biggest increase in complaints was the upgrade to 4.02 PL2 and mostly afftects the newer members although not always, I had one member the other night who has been registered for three years suddenly have logging in trouble.

We are running 4.02 PL4 Upgraded from 4.02 PL2
Salt script WAS run
Upgrade.php was NOT run, just the upload directory uploaded.
Salt value in database reads 30

Things tried.....
Delete cache and cookies on users machines
Changed users browsers, usually from IE7 or 8 to firefox 3.xx or vice-versa
changed cookie prefix (running out of combinations folks)
Manually changed passwords (mixed results)
Deleted users then re-registered them (mixed results)
Support ticket: advice to delete coo......(didn't work)

We as a forum are thinking of simply abandoning the last three months and switching the 3.8.4 forum back in and carrying on from there. I'll just have to create the users we have gained since the upgrade to 4.xx although we'll have lost the posts since Christmas. We need to get back to chatting on topics related to the forum subject and less about logging in problems, 3.8.4 supplied that to us.

Is there really a problem somwhere that is down to vBulletin, surely what I'm seeing can't all be user error.

On the brighter side, it's a lovely sunny spring day here on Arran now that the snow is clearing, I'm on holiday for four days and there is beer in the fridge, doesn't get much better.

Jeff.
