I have an imported customised style that I've changed to suit my needs

I've created a child style (changed setting here), imported the new XML and it's changed both parent and child.

Having looked at how styles worked, I'm guessing that importing the new xml has also flowed to the child stylevar and template settings.

How do I avoid this?
