How can I get the New Posts in a particular Category?

For example, let's say I have 10 different Categories, each with several related Forums/Sub-Forums under it. How can I get the New Posts in just one of the Categories (and all of its Forums/Sub-Forums)?

I know vB3.x used the "exclude" parameter, but that required listing and excluding every single other sub-forum, forum, and category, which was quite messy and inefficient. For example, if you had a large forum with 300 forumids and wanted the New Posts in a Category with forumid 1 and its 4 sub-forums with forumids 2, 3, 4 and 5, you had to use:

I see that the "exclude" parameter still works in vb4, but it then lists every single forum that has been excluded (including hidden and private forums) at the top of the search results. In a big forum, that list of over a hundred excluded forum names takes up almost half the page.

The default New Posts link is practically useless for a large forum with a lot of Categories as it produces too many results that are all over the place. Surely there has got to be an easier way to display the New Posts in a specific category that avoids the above 2 problems.
