Moving on to VB 4.x.

I have been trying to find a thread to post this in, but most have seemed to turn into flame wars..

I have played with VB 4, and even upgraded a small site of mine to it. Honestly, I do not have too much of an issue with a lot of the problems others are having. These things will get ironed out over time. I do however feel the need to relay to the VB team that I cannot recommend migrating to 4.x any time soon for my clients. I have some clients that have forums larger than 99.9% of the sites I have seen using VB and I could never recommend it.

The changes to the product were far too drastic and too quick. I like the idea of where things are going, but some of these changes are so radical, big forums will risk thousands, if not millions of dollars on a major upgrade like this. Let's not even consider the shock users will receive (and most users really hate change), but how these changes may affect infrastructure. Most large forums use very optimized environments where subtle changes alone can affect performance. Say what you want about the changes in 4.x, but nobody here can honestly define them as subtle.

My bread & butter is in optimizing, modifying, and deploying VB for a small group of clients. At this point, I cannot risk my livelihood on 4.x. I will continue to run my small board with it, and learn the new ways, but training teams on these new methods with be very costly and honestly, not worth it (yet).

I really wish the VB team here would have thoughtfully rolled out these changes slower or at least provided mechanisms to roll them in slower as teams were brought up to speed. At this rate, it would take at least 3-4 months to fully train some of the teams I work with to safely handle an upgrade. Clients do not want to dish this out and would rather pay people like me (and the rest of their teams) money to maintain the 3.x line.

My hope here is to relay what a person like me in the field is currently experiencing with the new product. Perhaps this will help in future versions of VB.

Thanks for listening!
