Forum Total Threads/Posts is WAY off

Which isn't even remotely close (although 4 billion posts would be nice and probably a marketing opportunity for vBulletin... ;) ). I've rebuilt the thread counters, post cache. No luck

I have NOT done the rebuild statistics as the warning says "Rebuilding statistics will cause the loss of the total forum view and active users data." and I'm not entirely sure what that means. Basically, what EXACTLY is going to be reset? What does "active users data" really mean, etc?
