MYSQL problems due to high CPU load, What is the solution?

I hope I am posting into the correct section
My forum has 500-1000 online users within 30 minutes
Now I am encountering high CPU load and MYSQL problems very often

The mysql config of the server are already optimized
And all used hacks are not resource needing

In order to solve this problem, what is the next step to do?

The host told me to ask the script owner to optimize it.
But I am not sure there is a way to optimize the final version itself

Please help with this problem
