Forum Optimization

What is the best way to optimize the forum? Is it essential to have a dedicated server for forum? We have 11*000 members and 38*000 posts. I know this is not huge* but even then the forum is slow sometimes. Our site responds pretty fast in non-forum pages. But* it responds little slow for all forum pages.

Any pointers are much appreciated. Thanks!
