Where can I get a 'easy to follow' (i'm no genius) guide on installing/upgrading PHP to the latest stable?

I've purchased vb4 and since discovered my vps/server is running an inadequate version of php (5.1.xx).

I'm not very confident in dabbling with the php - so any & all help is welcome.
