RSS spam prevention - delay for new posters to prevent pushing spam? Other ideas? It has come to my attention recently that I may need a different approach or different tools to control spamvertising in the vBulletin RSS feed than the forum itself. In the forum itself* I take the approach of not letting one bad apple ruin the bunch -- I don't moderate new posts before they're posted* but if someone signs up and spamvertises* I delete the offensive post and ban them as quickly as possible. This works ok* as one or two people may notice the spamvertising post before I delete it as quickly as possible as the moderator* but usually I catch any spamvertising posts quickly so it's not a horrible issue. However* a member recently pointed out that subscribing to the forum's RSS feed* the spamvertising posts I deleted on the forum itself are still shown in their newsreader. I subscribed to my own forum's RSS feed just now using google reader through firefox* and sure enough* a couple spamvertising posts are there in the RSS* complete with spamverting content* that I deleted this morning. Sorry for this post getting long winded* but I suppose my open question is whether there is anything 4.x can offer to help control/remove spamvertising from the RSS feed without changing what is working ok on the forum itself. For example* could controls be put in place that don't push posts from brand-new-unknown-user-usergroup users to the RSS feed immediately? (I currently have usergroups setup so that links can't be posted by brand new users until they have a certain number of posts and also pms can't be sent by brand new users so someone can't signup with 0 posts and pm my members spam undetected) Maybe something similar could be applied to which usergroups' messages are immediately pushed via the RSS feed (and I guess the untrusted-usergroup posts could be pushed to the RSS feed after they've stood on the forum for enough time for a moderator to take action* though I'm not sure how this would work without adding load and complexity...) The problem is that once a post is pushed to the RSS feed* it's there whether it's deleted/moderated from the forum or not* so it changes the game a bit. |
