vB doesn't recognize some returning members
 

I have an odd problem and cannot find a solution.

After importing from an old YaBB Gold forum last month, vB does not always recognize existing user accounts when folks arrive for the first time after the transition.

Some folks who cannot log in email me and I simply view their profile, change their time zone, and save it and vB can then find them.

The problem is that, instead of emailing me, some members re-register using the same email address as is already associated with their profile.

Since I have "Require Unique Email Addresses" set to YES, they should not be able to do that.

A search for the email address via the User manager always finds both the old and new account.

Trying to save either account always produces a duplicate email address error.

So...

1. Does anyone know why vB sometimes, but not other times, recognizes members trying to log in for the first time.

2. Is there anything I can do about it other than manually viewing one-at-a-time a few thousand profiles and saving them?
