Dubai was offered the chance to take a stake in Gulf Air in the early 1980s - then jointly owned by the governments of Bahrain, Oman, Abu Dhabi and Qatar - before the emirate decided to go it alone and launch Emirates Airline in 1985, it has been revealed.
