Managing three databases at once - correct tool?

Hello,

I have limited experience with MySQL and phpMyAdmin. I want to import an XLS spreadsheet into a second database besides the one for vB, and eventually get the vB database and this new one sharing information. I also need OpenX to be able to use both databases (plus its own) in order to select the correct ad for a given location. So, three databases need to communicate, and perhaps copy columns over from one to the next.

Is phpMyAdmin adequate for this type of work? I also have the OpenOffice database program, called Base.

I also see there's a popular database management program called Navicat that is an additional cost. Will Navicat give me better/necessary management tools than phpMyAdmin and Base? I don't mind learning new software, I just want to spend time on the right one for the task.

Thanks,

TW
