Does proximity matter at all when selecting a host?
 

Or as a rule of thumb should I look for a hosting company closer to home?

Will there be any pitfalls in going with a company halfway around the world?

What if most of my users are centrally located in one region, will it make sense to select a hosting company closer to this region?
