1. Action Required

IHRC requests campaigners and supporters to write letters and emails to their country’s foreign minister and the UN. The model letters provided below can be used as a guide.


2. Summary

The administration of Bahrain’s Jau prison continues to deny the prominent figures of the Bahrain uprising their basic human rights. Furthermore, they have prevented them from family visits and for more than two consecutive months have deprived them of health care and their other basic hygiene needs, unless they bow down to the prison’s conditions, which specifically requires them to wear the uniform of criminal prisoners.


3. Background

Sheikh Muhammad Al-Miqdaad has a painful swelling in his stomach of which the cause is unknown. The Jau Prison administration has refused to take the Sheikh to a hospital to determine his state of health simply because he refused to wear the criminal prisoner uniform.

Sheikh Mirza Al-Mahroos is suffering from severe pain both in his legs and his stomach. He does not know the cause of this pain and has also been denied medical attention.

Dr Abdul Jalil Al-Singace has been prevented from using his crutches, which he depends on for movement. He is also restricted from family visits.

Hassan Mushaima has been prevented from receiving his medication and medical treatment despite his terminal illness. All his hospital appointments were cancelled which reflects the desire of the state to kill him slowly with both physical and psychological torture.

The suffering of the political and human rights figures is contrary to the fundamental principles for the treatment of prisoners which was adopted and proclaimed by the General Assembly Resolution to the United Nations 111/45 on 14 December 1990. It mandates that all prisoners are treated with respect for their inherent dignity and worth as human beings.

I would like to bring to your attention the inhumane conditions that four prominent human rights figures in Bahrain are being subjected to in Bahrain’s Jau Prison.

Their treatment is indeed a violation of their basic human rights and civil liberties and must therefore not be tolerated by the British government who claims to stand for justice.
