TU170: Learning online, computing with confidence


Part 1: Using browsers and Word processor
1. Open your browser and use the keyword “Flexible Silicon Chips” to search for one resource only talking about Flexible Silicon Chips. Use your own words to write a short essay summarizing the resource you have selected. Make sure to list your references in the bibliography list.
2. Save your work for this part in a Word document under the name Part1.doc. The word file should contain:
• Title (2 marks)
• Paragraph heading(s) (3 marks)
• Two to three paragraphs containing approximately 400 words. You can talk about the description, components, simple technical background, and possible applications (You do not have to stick exactly to these ideas). (15 marks)
• Bibliography list (3 marks)
• Page numbering (2 marks)
Part 2: Practicing PowerPoint (15 marks)
Using MS PowerPoint:
Summarize the content of (4G in the USA) attached to this TMA to create 6 to 8 PowerPoint slides presentation. The marks will be given according to the following criteria:
• Font size (42 for headings and 22 for text) (2 marks)
• Font type (Cambria for the heading and Batang for text) (2 marks)
• Suitable Background design and colour (2 marks)
• Slide content (7 marks)
• Slide numbering (2 marks)
Make sure to name the corresponding PowerPoint file as Part2.ppt



Part 3: Practicing on Spreadsheets using MS Excel (30 marks)
1. You have been introduced with the concept of search engines and how to search for information using a keyword or a search directory. In this part you are required to create a spreadsheet containing a comparison table between the search engines (Yahoo, Google, AltaVista, Bing and AOL) according the search result number. You should use a keyword with two words and apply the narrowing techniques (“”, -, +) on this keyword. (10 marks)


Example: If you use the open education keyword, the table will be similar to the following:


Open education “Open education” “Open education” - UK “Open education” + UK
Yahoo
Google
Alta vista
Bing
AOL


2. After filling the above table, find the maximum, minimum, and the average value corresponding to each row (each search engine). (15 marks)
3. Draw a column chart (bar chart) that represents all the search results for the five search engines. (5 marks)

• Show your work for the table and the chart in the same worksheet.
• Make sure to name the corresponding Excel file as Part3.



Part4: Answer the following questions (30 marks)
1) What are some of the common features that operating systems and application programs share?
2) How is the multicore chip useful for microcomputers?
3) How does a bar code reader work?
4) What is a storage area network?
5) Explain the difference between a client/server network and a peer-to-peer network.
6) Describe the difference between spyware and snoopware.
